Medieval 2 Total War Siege Warfare Mini Guide

Here is a request from Chris, a Mini Guide explaining a little the strategy to addopt when you want to storm a city. The text might be a little fast so sometime might be a good idea to stop and read. Making Guide is not my specialty. ;)

Feel free to ask questions =)

Here is a very good description of the principle showed in the video that SFDean said in the totalwar.com Forum.

Some nice lessons illustrated in the video sequence.

1. Take (and defend) walls with sword units. No rank bonus for spear units, no cavalry, so sword units are the way to go. (Presumably, also consider use of heavy axe infantry vs. armored swordsmen.)

2. Combine ladders with siege towers. Your men with ladders climb the wall first, further away from the gate, and the defenders bunch there to fight them. Then the siege towers discharge their men as reinforcements CLOSER to the gate. You put a lot of men atop the wall fast and take the gate fast.

3. Use missile troops (preferably archers, not flat trajectory crossbows) to harass/distract/weaken the wall units, but shift fire immediately to another target once your units get into melee combat atop the wall.

4. After you've seized the wall top of the gate area, you can bring your battering ram and breakthrough troops forward to the gate, free of deadly fire from the wall towers in the gate area.

Very explained in my opinion

Morti said...

and i realy want to learn how do fight battels like you!! give me a note

Attila said...

hehe morti23, happy you enjoyed the fight =)

As for how to get templar knights. You must developpe your city with better walls and at a certain point guild might contact you and offer to build a building in your cities. But note that some Guild seem to be in link with certain region and they appear randomely. It work the same way as the Thieve guild.

Im a pretty experienced total war player. I've always focused on the walls and dont use a battering ram as it often sets on fire and gets alot of your men killed, even if you take 2. Also it is often not worth storming the gate unless you control the walls as youll get shot in the back alot. And using your own missile troops can often get them killed alot for very little return espec' if you dont have archer superiority.

Attila said...

yeah you right on all point.

In some case I find the battering ram very effective when you have a lot of cavalry, it allow you to use that cavalry and charge in the middle while it's not as well defended as the walls. So if you don't have good troop to take the wall, your infantry keep the enemies busy there, while you cavalry, or elite infantry goes take the center and hold is 3 min. Every strategy must be contextual and addacted to the situation.

In Rome total War i didn't had ram since it was useless. But in medieval 2 it's a little more useful because of the strategy I explained before, and it does take in fire as easily as in Rome especially with the strategy in the video where you in a way escort it with tower that divide the enemies fire.

oups, sorry for the small error there

You should also make videos of castle and citadel sieges. I haven't played the game (well the demo but...) yet but I have RTW and 2-3 more wall line must requiere more... patience. You must have units to reinforce after taking a wall and also have reserved siege equipement for the other wall lines.

Attila said...

well 3 walls battle are not that hard, depending the defending army. Some battle worth it, other don't... I nearly alway capture a fortress in auto battle because the fought outside the walls and lost most troop, leading the siege to be a formality...

In regard to Templar/Hospitallier guilds, I got a request for both from Inverness, so it is very random indeed.

Attila said...

yeah, some faction have access to both, other only to once of them

Is your game really that laggy or is it just the camera? Also my next campiegn is going to be as the HRE. Any tips?

Attila said...

the video is made laggy, it's at 6 fps so that it can fit on youtube and look ok.
As for HRE, I didn't played them yet, but cavalry seem to be the strong point.

Anonymous said...

Ok I tried to use your seige strategy and I failed miserably. I did it on Hard Diffuculty on a custom battle. The enemy archers destroyed my seige tower real fast so that is one of the many problems. Can you help me? By the way I was HRE and the enemy was poland.

Attila said...

hmm well, i would need to see what you did to understand what went wrong. Custom battle are not the same thing as campaign battle.

One principle of strategy is to attack when you have number advantage, and custom battle doesn't respect at all that principle since both army are equal. In the case where you have the same number, you should siege them by letting them die of hunger until they try to broke the siege and can resist them in the open.

Sieging a fort that has the same number of troop as you have is a bad idea unless you have a full army of elite troop against a bunch of bad militia.

what kind of computer do u have my game runs really slow and laggy on mine.

Attila said...

check in the system requirement you will have your answer

i have the game but haven't had much time to play it, so i was wondering around what year(turn) do they invent gunpowder or discover the americas? or are the years historically accurate?

Attila said...

I think the gun are arround turn 80-90, and the America is after the year 1400. You need the best port and best ships.

Anonymous said...

wats all that trouble wit waiting the next turn waiting for ememies reinforment when u could use trebucts(sry about the spellings)or even catapults?the only reason why i use them in all the RTW and M2TW because of the dam towers.

Anonymous said...

can any help me with the meaning "divide and conquere" can't seem to use it.somehow u are outnumbered and u divide the emeny into two..plz tell me how to use this

Attila said...

Divide and conquer mean that by dividing your enemies (between them, mostly from a political point of view) you isolate them from each other making them weaker.

If you enemies resist to you attempt to divided in general it's because they understand the principle of
"United we stand, divided we fall"

The main idea of those two military saying is just that a Single man, unit, battalion, army, kindgom, country, empire, is easier to defeat then two that work togeter. That's why to conquer them you must divide them.

On the battlefield it can be apply by attracting an enemy unit away from the main battle core making it easier to destroy.

I find when defending the best method, especially if the enemy outnumbers you and has better troops, is to hang all your men back and put them down the central road to the center.
I have one many many heroic victories on hard this way and even if you don't win (it's not a miracle strategy) you will destroy the army who attacked you so it is easy to take the settlement back.

Hope this helps :)

Mike

yeah it's a good strategy indeed

Can you make one about Rome Total war on how to attack and defend a seig

Attila said...

Well i think my best advice would be to check the german chronicles they are full of siege. =)

WOW, just wow, that was some of the craziest stuff iv ever seen on a computer screen, well next to
2girls1cup...
but on a different note, can building forts and putting soldiers in them decrease their upkeep? and by how much does ur income increase every time u upgrade a farm or market?

Attila said...

well farm increase your population, and by doing so increase your tax in a random way depending many factor.

as for fort, in kingdom the fort support a few troops, but unclear how many in medieval i don't know

Hi, i've just got the game and i'm playing as the venicians, but they lack a bit in cavelry, how do i go about getting either the templars or hospitilars?

Attila said...

well you need a guild for that, but venician strength is mostly crossbow and spearman.

Anonymous said...

Sorry what i meant was how do i get the guild?

Attila said...

they offer to join you as your cities grow

hey wsup ive been playing medieval two for awhile also played rome, i mainly play as england or france with the occasional danes or russians thrown in. Ive only ever gotten the templars thrice (thats three times btw) twice as france in the southeastern sector (toulouse bordeaux ect.) and once as england in dublin (freaked the shit out of me when i got it....dublin was a city n both other times it was a fortress/citadel that got em) as for your defensive stuff i find it helps alot to set the unit count to large (not huge) because you can set a unit of archers directly above the gate and we all know how deadly that can be to and attacker. I rarely lose defensive battles and my prime test of this is the castle caen which ive lost once...ever and that was against 3 full armies (two france one spain) and i still managed to weaken them enough to have my relief force from nottingham take the castle back. havent looked at ur battles yet but im sure their spectacular with what others are saying. ive got a few amazing stories myself but anyone whose played as long as i have must have a handful as well. if u wanna talk total war sometime my msn hotmail is darksqwerl@hotmail.com oh and again just btw i play on the retrofit mod most of the time because my goddam brother kept throwing my original m2tw disc on the floor and now it wont run anymore......ive ppalyed as every faction and won before i think the hardest out there is the hungarians and the venetians/milanese (they are pretty weak for a while due to the fact they have weak cities close to eachother....i was so disappointed when i defended the city of venice and there werent canals all around with bridges n stuff for me to bottleneck and skirmish :( peace n luv ciao
