Medieval II Total War Turkish Chronicles 16 Skirmish

This first real battle was a test I wanted to make before engaging my full forces. Since I had killed nearly all good general. I had to have an idea how easier it would be to win against the remaining armies. It was also a good test of my own force. I had to know how well my troop would do against so many enemies.

As soon as I had a good idea of those informations, I retreated, ready to fight an other day =)

Greetings, I have been following your chronicles since your Sicily campaign. I found it via the post your made on the medieval 2 total war official forums. (I go by the name Vulfgar The Viking there :)

Needless to say I am enjoying your chronicles a lot, keep up the good work!

Now, about those mongols, they sure look nasty! Good thing that you killed their super generals.

Happy to see you enjoy my work =)

Yeah those Mongols will be interesting to fight. And they won't fall in one day =)

Sun Tzu said: "The good fighters of old first put themselves beyond the possibility of defeat, and then waited for an opportunity of defeating the enemy."

Sun Tzu was wise, and many of his principle are part of the total war games. People really should read him. =)

I think i will make a post with my recommended strategy books. Sun Tzu will indeed be on the list. =)

Vulfgar here

Those mongols seem to have a lot of very strong horse archers, how do you plan on defeating them?

Attila said...

Well it will probably be a war of endurance. I will weaken them over many battle and planned defeat. Before engaging myself in the counter attack that will make me take back any lost territory.

So, i will lose many soldier in the process. But considering 1 Mongols soldier have the strength of at least 4 inexperience turk soldier. Sacrificing some troop won't be very damaging to me. But for them they won't be able to recover as fast.

So long term war, with many skirmish and organize retreat.

The more the Mongols will gain territory, the more they will be easy prey.

As Frederick II once said, He who defend every thing, defend nothing.

Vulfgar here

That sounds like a solid strategy :)

I have heard that their generals have high dread, but if spearmen can stand a while and let foot archers fire at their horse archers then I think you would be able to do well against them in open field battles.

Btw, could you stage the battles in places where there are few or no trees, that makes the videos a lot more enjoyable? ^^

Of course, fighting the mongols in the forest with spearmen and archers is probaly the best idea :P

I like the idea on a book guide. May I suggest some?

The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli

The Art of War by Niccolo Machiavelli.

The Fifteen Decisive Battles Of The World From Marathon To Waterloo by Edward Creasy

Great Generals of the Napoleonic Wars and Their Battles : 1805-1815 by Andrew Uffindell

hehe, well i don't alway choose the battle field Vulfgar. But hopefully we future battlefield won't have as much trees =)

by the way choose other in identity, that allow you to use your own nickname =)

Matt13333, yes those are good book indeed =)

I didn't readed The Fifteen Decisive Battles Of The World From Marathon To Waterloo by Edward Creasy and Great Generals of the Napoleonic Wars and Their Battles : 1805-1815 by Andrew Uffindell

But i will note them and put them in a potential guide, just by the title it seem interesting. =)

If anyone else have good books to put in the list, feel free to tell, I'm sure every one is interested.

Of course, of course :)

"by the way choose other in identity, that allow you to use your own nickname =)"

Thank you very much.

May I offer some advice? I haven't played M2TW myself - my computer can't run it :(

However, I have played Shogun, Medieval and Rome quite a lot ^^.

On the overall strategy I have no advice to offer, since I agree with you that it will be a war of attrition.

On the tactical level some of the concepts from the previous games may be still be useful.
Since the Mongols use a heavy force of cavalry, an anti cavalry army will be appropriate.

This leaves two options;
One: fighting fire with fire i.e. cavalry with cavalry, however, one may very easily end up getting burned :p because fielding an army of Sipahis and Qapukulu will be very expensive.

Two: Fighting fire with water, in other words, melee cavalry with a combination of heavy infantry and spearmen.

Against normal cavalry armies spearmen alone would probaly be enough, but since the Mongols are very fearsome warriors there is a risk that the fighting spirit of spearmen would be broken by their fearsome charge (fire can vaporise water)

Thus a solid unit of heavy infantry with the high morale will stand firm and hold high the banners of the mighty Sultan against the charge of the mongol hordes!

After the charge, the cavalry will be immobile and now is the time to send in the spearmen in order to kill the cavalry in melee. (When the fire cannot move, it cannot find new nutrition to feed itself and will drown in the sea of water closing in from all sides)

Their horse archers are strong, but few in numbers compared to the numbers of foot archers, so in a shoot out duel, the superior numbers of the foot archers should be victorious, even against the mongol horse archers.

As for heavy infantry, Janissary Heavy Infantry, Saracen Militia, Dismounted Siphai Lancers or some mercenary heavy infantry of the province in question can provide.

As for spearmen, Saracen Militia, Spear Militia or mercenary spearmen.

As for foot archers, well any arhcers would do, but Ottoman Infantry, Janissary Archers or, if gunpowder has been invented, Janissary Musketeers.

Victory over the Mongols will be a fine way indeed to show what made the Turkish Empire feared by the nations of Western Euro, the ability to field massive armies, loose the army, but field a new just as strong!

May the armies of Islam bring death to the Mongols! ^^

Important note to my post above!

Formation, formation means everything if the tactic mentioned above is to be of any use.

"Alone you fall, but together we shall stand" quote I came up with when I played a team based multiplayer game. I think it can be applied to large infantry formations as well.

Front line: A line of heavy infantry.
Second line: A line of spearmen.
Third line: Foot archers.
Fourth: More foot archers.

Give those mongols hell!

I don't know so much about cavarly tacticks, but what if you take few catapults and surround them with spearman? I don't know that will it work since I haven't tested this kind of defence never.

But artillery, no mateer of what century are we fighting, should be devastating against cavarly...

Anonymous said...

Ah yes, the terror and fear, together with the actual casualties, caused by artillery should prove very useful against the Mongols!

Catapults should be one of the best artillery pieces to use against units, since its very accurate, compared to other artillery.

Attila said...

Some really good advice there, Thanks a lot Vulfgar The Viking.

The main challenge against Mongols is indeed to make your stay together so that they stand to fight. So the best offense for the moment is defense. =)

I think your advise will be most useful when I will finally have some good troop in the region because for the moment my troop run award really fast in battle. Spearman resist and kill many, but they can't hold the line very long.

I will try some strategy in the future when i get the opportunity.

whta did you learn about the mongols in that batlle? What advantage do they have against you? What are the disadavntage do they have agianst you?

Attila said...

Well I learned that 1 Mongols worth 4 of many soldiers in battle. I learned that missile units are the best way to kill the Mongols if you succeed in immobilize them. I learned that my troop will better hold the line now that nearly all good enemy generals were kill. So It will be easier to fight them now. But many of my troop will need to be sacrifice in the process in many skirmish that will slowly weaken the enemy forces. =)

I was playing as the turks and i found that using a few lines of cheap spearmen (spear and town militia) and then hitting the enemy in flanks with sipahi lancers, then shooting them in the rear with mountd archers does the trick. Plus because they are surrounded most units will fight to the death and this means less people to fight. But i did loose alot of men to finally defeat all the three waves.
I did enjoy using my monster bombard to kill 75+ including general in one shot. That was fun.

Attila said...

hehe, yeah I hope I will get those monster bombard soon, That sure will be usefull!
