Rome Total War German Chronicles 12 Bridge fight against Gauls
This battle is a good example of the effectiveness of defending a bridge. The interesting aspect of my tactic is that I used a V formation. This formation is especially effective when you use a phalanx. Since the enemies engage 1 unit at a time, the other unit you have can kill enemies from the rear. It also allows you to increase the morale of the 2 units forming the V formation. Completed with screaming women you can only see the destructive effect of that formation during the video. So if you combine the devastating effect of the V formation with a well planned cavalry charge you can actualy kill 50% of the enemies right on the bridge.

thanks Attila im using the same tactic as you use a brides with pikes now, this will undoubtedly keep my caultes down, hehehe you slaughter them no mercy!
Hehe Yeah that a great tactic, very effective =)
so you saying a v formation is better than a box for mation on the bridge? because you never want to use a phalanx exactly ON a bridge because they ingauge in hand to hand combat
Well the V formation is interesting. When the enemies charge they need a swing to get a charge bonus. So if you make the box formation, the have it when they are on the bridge and they use it in a frontal shock. But in a V formation they lost it because your troop actualy engage the flank of the enemies unit, before they engage you, so you’re the one attacking. Reducing or eliminating the number of unit that have a charge bonus.
So from what I experienced they are far more likely to break the phalanx against a box formation.
Also in a V formation, the bottom of the V is nearly impossible to break because it combines the spear of 2 phalanxes.
So I while I cannot say for sure that it's always a good formation, some observation I did lately bring me to conclude that a V formation is better
yer with the box i found that when against roman legions, they would tend to lose formation more easily that one side would fail me and rout, this then spreads panic among my over troops then game over
with the V it forces the other side lose the formation, and nothing but pikes everywhere.
Yeah, One of my friend like "real life" battles and told me they actualy like to use the V formation when they defend a door of a fort, he say that it allow them to surround the entering enemies very fast and destroy them with halbardier and pike. In the case of a fort, you are even protected against ballista fire and arrows fire
